NDRF activates response mechanism

GUWAHATI, Sept 20 � In the wake of earthquake of the magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale that occurred in Sikkim, the 1st National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), based here, has activated its response mechanism to carry out rescue operations in the affected areas.

Reacting on the current situation, Alok Kumar Singh, Commandant of the 1st NDRF, said that the force has activated six search-and-rescue teams with all equipment to respond to any situation of earthquake and landslide.

He further stated that people should also be aware of the basics of rescue in case of earthquake without getting panicky.

Elaborating on the structure of the rescue teams he informed that every team consisted of 45 rescuers, live victim tracking devices, machines and tools to cut metal and concrete structures, 2.2 kv generators , canines to track victims, victim locating devices, communication setup based on VHF/ HF, medical support team, engineers and technical support teams with ambulance.
