Navajyoti lift SR Phookun Trophy

GUWAHATI, March 21 � With a thrilling six-run victory against Bud Cricket Club, Navajyoti Club clinched the title in the Suren Ram Phookun Maharana Centenary Cricket Tournament.

In the close summit clash at the Judges� Field here today, put into bat, Navajyoti scored a fighting total of 187 for the loss of eight wickets in the stipulated 40 overs. Thanks to a 86-ball 50 by Hrishikesh Tamuly, Navajyoti put up a commendable total. Biplab Saikia of Bud was the most successful bowler with six victims.

Making a brave chase, Bud came very close of the winning target but the tailenders failed to keep their temperament and fell six runs short. They were all out for 181 with five balls to spare. Manoj Malo tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but his 50-ball 49 finally went in vain.

Nipon Deka (Navajyoti) received the man-of-the-final award while his teammate Abhijit Sinha Roy was adjudged man-of-the-tournament. Hrishikesh Tamuli (Navajyoti), Dhiraj Goswami (Bud CC) and Roshan Basfor (Bud CC) were picked for the best batsman, best bowler and best fielder awards respectively.
