National Youth Fest begins today

GUWAHATI, Jan 7 � The 5-day 19th National Youth Festival-2015 will get under way at the Nehru Stadium here tomorrow at 3 pm.

The Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs is organising the event in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare.

The chief guest of the opening ceremony will be Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, while Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of State (Ind) for Sports and Youth Affairs will preside over the function. The guest of honour would be Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs in presence of Ajit Singh, Minister of State, Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam.

�Assam, nay the entire North East is going to be the proud host of the festival for the first time. Thus through these activities it will open a wide range of scope and avenues for the youth to provide nationwide exposure for fulfillment of their cultural talents and abilities,� official sources said.

The festival will feature cultural evenings starting from tomorrow till January 11. Singers Alka Yagnik, Zubin Garg, Papon and rock bands from the North-east will stage live performances in different cultural evenings.

A total of 2,500 participants including officials from 24 States are participating in the events of the festival. For attending different events during the five-day programme � including the cultural functions � entry passes for college students have been sent to Cotton College, Handique Girls' College, Arya Vidyapith College, Gauhati Commerce College, etc.
