National Sorting Hub launched

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Oct 18 - In a major development, the Dibrugarh Postal Region formally operationalised its National Sorting Hub for speed post and other e-commerce articles on Monday.

Vasumitra, the Chief Post Master General of Assam Circle dedicated the National Sorting Hub and also dedicated mechanised delivery of postal articles to people of the region by flagging off newly bought motorcycles for delivery of e-commerce articles.

The motorcycles were flagged off on October 14 last at Graham Bazar Post Office in the presence of Akashdeep Chakravarty, Post Master General, Dibrugarh Region, Susen Peda, Superintendent of Dibrugarh Postal Division and assistant superintendents Ajit Bharali and Jayanta Kumar Nath.

In a symbolic function, the postmen drove past the dignitaries in red-coloured bikes immediately after the flag off, to deliver a record number of e-commerce articles received yesterday following the recently-concluded Maha Bachat sale on Flipkart and Amazon titled as Big Billion Days and Festive Sales.

Since the National Sorting Hub was operational, articles booked from Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and other metros 3 days before were ready to be delivered in Dibrugarh today.

Vasumitra during his address reminded the audience that this feat had been achieved in Mumbai 20 years ago and promised the people of the region that the next step towards cashless deliveries will reach the city much earlier than Mumbai due to massive computerisation, which is under way in the region.

Rural hand-held devices for swiping credit/debit cards are being tested and the day is not far off when every postman will have Point of Sale machine with him and COD (Cash on Delivery) articles which will be delivered with a swipe of debit/credit cards at the doorsteps of the customers, he said.
