National seminar stresses preservation of herbal plants in NE

NAGAON, Aug 26 - A two-day national seminar on medicinal and aromatic plants in the the North-east was organised by the Department of Herbal Science and Technology of ADP College with the financial assistance of UGC. The seminar also underscored the need for preservation of herbal plants in the region.

Leading scientists from across the country took part in the seminar, which saw presentation of around 400 research papers.

The seminar was formally inaugurated by Dr KK Deka, Vice-Chancellor of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya.

The key note address was given by Dr NC Talukdar, Director of IASST. In his address Dr Talukdar discussed about various research works carried out by the scientists in the context of global development.

At the beginning, Principal Dr S Bhagawati welcomed the guests and participants. Dr Mausumi Saikia, HoD of Herbal Science Department, conducted the seminar which was graced by governing body president S Ojha and others.

Prof MC Kalita, Prof Sankar Chandra Deka, Dr Priti Mathur, Prof Chandana C Barua, Dr VGM Naidu, Dr Manash Bhoumik, Dr Jyotirmoy Dev and other eminent scientists addressed the plenary session and gave a brief sketch on different species of herbal and medicinal plants available in the North-east.

Five technical sessions were held during the two-day seminar, besides showcasing of 58 posters.

Diamond jubilee of ADP College: The year-long celebrations of diamond jubilee of ADP College will begin from September 7. The programme will start with the hoisting of 60 flags by the persons associated with the college.

Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia, will unveil the statue of Anandaram Dhekial Phukan, which has been constructed with the financial assistance of the teachers of the college. A book fair and art exhibition have also been organised to mark the occasion which will be inaugurated by former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha Rongbong Terang.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Central Minister Rajen Gohain, Minister Keshab Mahanta, MLA Rupok Sarma, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomus Council Tuliram Ronghang will grace the open session to be held on September 7.

The cultural procession, alumni meet, �guru-shishya milan� and other functions will be held on September 8.

The Sukdev Goswami memorial inter-college debating competition will be held on September 9. Freshers� social, cultural function and other activities will be held on September 10.
