National School Games taekwondo from today

GUWAHATI, Feb 1 � Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, in collaboration with State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare (SLAC) will host the 57th National School Games U-17 Taekwondo Championship at Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, Sarusajai here from tomorrow.

Elaborating about the championship in a press conference here today, State Sports Minister Ajit Singh said it is a nice privilege for the State to host such a national level tournament. He believes, considering the performance of the State taekwondo players at national level, this championship will definitely boost our youngsters in taking the game more seriously.

He also hoped that the four-day meet will be organised successfully as everybody is lending a helping hand to hosting the national championship.

Anjan Sarma, director incharge of Sports Directorate, while giving details about the championship said 178 boys and 175 girls from School Games Federation of India affiliated units like Assam, Bihar, Chattishgarh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa, IPSC, Jharkhand, KVS, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Vidya Bharati and Uttarakhand have confirmed their participation.

Sarma further informed that the girls competitors will be accommodated at Sports Hostel, Sarusajai while the boys will get their accommodation at Zakir Hussain Aquatic Complex.

A budget of Rs 9 lakh has been prepared for hosting the championship where competitions will be conducted in 10 weight categories for boys and nine for girls.

Deputy Directors Gautam Das, Pradip Hazarika and SLAC member secretary Manab Deka were also present in the press conference. The championship will be inaugurated tomorrow at 11 am where Sindhushree Khullar, secretary to Govt of India, Sports Ministry will be present as guest of honour.

Assam team: Ten boys and nine girls have been selected to represent the State in the championship. (Boys) Balwinder Singh, Ritupan Saikia, Kaustav Baruah, Raghu Boro, Jubin Ahmed, Jwngshar Basumatary, Ramesh Konwar, Ringsar Ramchiary, Birkhang Basumatary, Ajay Boro. (Girls) Mridusmita Roy, Swastika Borpatra Gohain, Alary Goyary, Sabita Ramchiary, Manika Baruah, Tasim Degum, Julie Baruah, Songita Bargayary, Alice Tongbram.
