National Press Day at Nagaon, Haflong

GUWAHATI, Nov 18 - �Media plays vital role in bringing positive change in society. Media Persons shoulder the responsibility in bringing to light the actual picture of what is happening in and around us�, said State�s Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Agriculture, Power etc. Rockybul Hussain while attending the State level celebration of National Press Day at District Library Auditorium, Nagaon on November 16, 2015, said an official press release here today.

Attending the programme as chief guest, the Minister reiterated the importance of the media in bringing positive changes in the society. He called on the media persons to give judicious coverage on important issues of society giving special emphasis on development stories etc.

The Department of Information and Public Relations, Assam and District Administration, Nagaon jointly organised the State level celebration of National Press Day on November 16, 2015 at the District Library Auditorium, Nagaon.

Noted cartoonist Champak Barbara delivered the key-note address on the theme of this year�s National Press Day, �The impact and import of cartooning and caricature as a medium of expression of opinion�. He dealt in length on the origin and development of cartoon and caricature. Barbara stated that throughout the ages, cartoons and caricatures have been reflecting the mood of the time creating subtle satire and with few strokes of the brush they express what long articles fail to express.

Eminent journalist Samudra Gupta Kashyap also shared his views on the topic, �The role of press in present scenario�. He stated that in today�s age, the role of the media becomes very vital. He opined that the media persons plays key role in bringing to light important issues pertaining the society which in turn contributes in the overall development of the society and mankind. He stressed on the need of organising orientation programmes for the media persons by some important departments so that apt coverage may be given on some important and sensitive matters.

As part of the programme, five senior and eminent journalists of Nagaon district, � Rajen Barkakati, Prof Sahajananda Ojha, Bolen Bora, Golap Saikia and Sanjeet Sarkar were felicitated for their contributions to the field of journalism in particular and society in general.

Deputy Commissioner of Nagaon Monalisa Goswami delivered the welcome speech.

Besides media persons and important dignitaries, Director of Information and Public Relations, Assam Ranjit Gogoi; Superintendent of Police, Nagaon Arabinda Kalita; Additional Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Rajkhowa were also present on the occasion.

Haflong Correspondent adds: With the rest of the country, the Information and Public Relations Department, Dima Hasao, Haflong observed National Press Day with theme - Impact and importance of cartooning and caricature as a medium of expression of opinion, at its office complex, Haflong on Monday.

On the occasion, a meeting was held with the District Information and Public Relations Officer Purabi Phonglo in the chair who was accompanied by senior journalist Anup Biswas, Surjya Thaosen, Samsul Alam and LK Hengna. Besides, all working media persons and cameramen were present in the programme along with the staffs of information and public relations department.

DIPRO Purabi Phonglo lighted a holy lamp of the occasion and was followed by other guests and media persons present in the programme.

At the outset, Phonglo explained the beginning of National Press Day in 1966 by Press Council of India, which is being observed in different way and themes. She articulated the impact and importance of cartooning and caricature as a medium of expression of opinion at present moment.
