National award for Garo NGO

TURA, April 22 � The Joint Management Committee, Anogre, West Garo Hills, was awarded the National Ground Water Augmentation Award 2010 under the category of NGO/ Gram Panchayat/urban local bodies for innovative practices for ground water augmentation through rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge to ground water.

The award was presented by Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Minister of Water Resources at New Delhi on April 12 in the presence of Vincent Pala, Minister of State for Water Resources.

Lucky Sangma, President of JMC received the award on behalf of the Committee. They were awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a certificate.

The JMC was chosen for the award for their contribution towards development of sustainability of ground water resources. The Committee is managing a Lake and its surroundings with the income generated from boating fees, parking fees, entry fees and from running a cafeteria.

The Dachi lake, situated at Anogre, was renovated and improved by the Soil & Water Conservation department under a Central Scheme in 2009-2010 at a cost of Rs 37 lakh.
