GUWAHATI, Dec 13 US Ambassador Nancy Powell today congratulated the Guwahati-based Foundation for Social Transformation (FST) for its award of a US State Department Womens Economic Opportunity grant.

The grant, signed in late September, supports FSTs project aimed at the economic empowerment of women across North-east India. It was awarded by a panel of experts in Washington.

Powell said that the US State Department was committed to providing economic opportunities for women and developing trade throughout South and Central Asia. The Foundation for Social Transformations project takes Secretary Hillary Clintons vision for the New Silk Road one step further by increasing regional linkages and womens economic prosperity through trade and investment, she said.

The project targeting approximately 150 women across Assam, Nagaland and Manipur is aimed at imparting intensive, tiered training, capacity building programmes, and seeding entrepreneurial efforts with the ultimate goal of improving these womens economic condition.

The women will receive training in eco-friendly livelihood skills linked to locally available resources and employment opportunities, as well as soft skills training.
