TINSUKIA, Sept 1 - The names of model colleges to be set up by the Government of Assam in several places of the State as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Model College has been strongly opposed by the people of Tinsukia.
In a public meeting convened by the All Moran Students� Union (AMSU) at the District Library auditorium here on Thursday, it was decided that the model college to be set up by the State Government at Doomdooma will be named as Gagan Chandra Sonowal Model College.
It may be mentioned here that Gagan Chandra Sonowal was the founder president of the district branch of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and he dedicated his life towards the uplift of the literary scenario of the district. The future generations should be aware of his contributions to the society in general. Opposing the name of the model college in the name of Deendayal Upadhyaya, the meeting observed that Deendayal Upadhyaya had no contribution towards the society of Assam. Even his name was new to most of the people of Assam and it would be an unjustified move on the part of the State Government to introduce him forcefully Assamese society.
The meeting was attended by several prominent educationists, social workers, students besides other people.
