GUWAHATI, Sept 13 - With a view to promote the rich civilisation and potential of the Barak river and the valley in the global arena, a mega cultural tourism festival will be organised by the Government of Assam covering the entire stretch of the river in the State soon. The proposed three-day Namami Barak Festival is scheduled to be held in the middle part of November this year. This festival will simultaneously be held at all the three districts of Barak valley and the main function will be held at Silchar.
Taking part in the first organising committee meeting of the festival which was held at Assam Administrative Staff College at Khanapara here today, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasised the need to highlight the rich civilisation and potential of the Barak river before the entire world through this festival. �Our aim is to discover Barak and stimulate development in the valley. This festival will definitely create an environment for reconnecting the people with their roots and rejuvenate the Barak valley civilisation�, he said.
The Chief Minister further mentioned that the Government of Assam has put equal focus on the development of the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys as well as the three hilly districts of the State and urged the public representatives to take active part in the festival and ensure involvement of local people in the celebration. He also directed the organising committee members to prepare plan and action which would successfully highlight the rich culture, history, traditional cuisine, sports, etc., of the valley and its potentiality to emerge as an important economic hub.
Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Industry and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, PWD Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia, MLAs of Barak Valley districts and senior government officials were present in the meeting.
