By CORRESPONDENT

NALBARI, Nov 15 - With the full moon night of autumn round the corner, preparations are on in full swing to celebrate the 13-day Raas festival, a famous religious and cultural event of North-east India, to be held on the Nalbari Hari Mandir premises from November 23 to December 5.

A Raas celebration committee has been formed with Ashok Kumar Sarma, MLA of Nalbari LAC as president and Nagen Deka as the secretary. A festive mood is gradually picking up in Nalbari town in particular and the entire district in general to celebrate the famous Raas festival. The celebration committee has been working round-the-clock to make the 85th Raas festival more attractive. The president and the secretary of the Raas celebration committee in a press conference held on the Harimandir premises said that the celebration committee has taken some special measures to draw the attention of visitors. Deka further said that about ten idol makers have been engaged in making life size idols depicting the eventful life of Lord Krishna to be displayed during the Raas. They have newly made and repaired more than 600 idols. Nearly 100 temporary stalls are under construction for the display of the idols.

The committee has decided to erect many electrically-illuminated gates with sophisticated devices, specially brought from Kolkata-based electricians, to welcome the visitors. He further added that the committee has decided to organise an all Assam-based nagara naam competition to popularise the folk art form of the lower Assam districts. A life form Raas for Majuli will also be displayed at the Nalbari Raas. The MLA said that the committee has been trying to transform Nalbari Raas as a great cultural event with the performance of folk cultures of different ethnic groups.

A total of 60 CCTV cameras will also be installed at different important places of the town to monitor the law-and-order situation during the Raas, he added. He further added that 15 subcommittees have been formed to complete the preparations smoothly.
