NALBARI, Oct 20 - On the occasion of World White Cane Safety Day, the MLA of Nalbari Assembly Constituency Ashok Sarma distributed Braille textbooks among ten blind students studying in HS first year in different educational institutions of the State at a brief function held recently at Nalbari Natya Mandir auditorium.
The Nalbari MLA arranged to get the entire books of HS first year printed in Braille format for the blind students. The textbooks published in Braille system will definitely help the blind students in acquiring the required knowledge in the respective subjects.
While the MLA distributed the textbooks among the students, the book distribution ceremony was conducted by Gitika Dutta Sarma, an activist working for specially-abled children. The function started with presentation of a song by Dolly Rajbongshi, a blind student of Arya College, Guwahati.
Addressing the meeting as chief guest, Mukul Patgiri, Professor in the Department of History in Bajali College, who is also visually impaired, said that the attitude of the society towards the blind is gradually changing as the visually challenged today get respect from the normal multitude.
He praised the role of Nalbari MLA Ashok Sarma for his initiative towards the blind students. Patgiri also explained the significance of the white cane in the life of blind people. He said as most people today are very busy and cannot spare time for others, so the white cane is the only appendage which helps to identify the blind even in a crowd.
The meeting was addressed by Bijoy Baishnav, Inspector of Schools, Nalbari.
