Nalbari College lecturer held for ULFA links

NALBARI, Sept 3 � Nalbari police acting on a tip-off, arrested one Biren Chakrabarty, a lecturer of Nalbari College, on charge of having links with militant outfit ULFA, from his Shantipur residence at around 11.30 last night.

The police also recovered two granades and some explosives from his residence.

The head of the Economics Department of Nalbari College, Chakravarty was today produced at the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court which remanded him to a six-day police custody.

The arrest of Chakravarty, who is a district-level leader of Asom Gana Parisad (AGP), created mixed reaction in the district. Hundreds of students of Nalbari College today gheraoed the Nalbari Police Station and blocked the police station road for half on hour in protest against the arrest of their teacher. They also submitted a memorandum to the SP Nalbari demanding his immediate release.

The Nalbari district unit of AGP also submitted a memorandum to Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri stating his arrest was a political conspiracy. They also demanded a magistrial inquiry into the incident.
