NALBARI, Aug 18 - Nalbari district has become the first open defecation-free district in the State under the Swachh Bharat Mission that is being implemented by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation to improve the sanitation, solid liquid waste management and drinking water.

While talking to this correspondent, the Deputy Commissioner Ananta Lal Gyani said that as per information uploaded in the website Swachhta Darpan under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, the position of the district is at the top in the State. According to him, the national rank of the district is 127 among 634 in case of cleanliness. Gyani added that as per the base line survey in 2012-13, the district was given a target of 69,580 individual household latrines to make the district, an open defecation-free district. Though the time to achieve the target was fixed on October 2, 2017, the district fulfilled it before two months. However, the Deputy Commissioner said that as the district achieved the target as per the survey of 2012, some families may be without sanitary latrines. Those families will also be covered within this year through the fund of Swachh Bharat Kosh, MP and MLAs Local Area Development Fund and MGNRGA.
