Nagaland Rules for senior citizens drafted

DIMAPUR, Oct 1 - Nagaland Social Welfare department has drafted the State Rules for Maintenance & Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens.

Informing this during observation of International Day of Older Persons in Kohima today, Secretary, Social Welfare, Dellirose M Sakhrie said the State Old Age Pension started in 1981 has been merged with the Central scheme Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension. The department is presently providing pension to 51,750 senior citizens between the age of 60-79 and old age pension to 3,161 senior citizens above 80 years.

She said the United Nations� International Day of Older Persons is celebrated to examine issues that affect their lives and more importantly, to appreciate their contributions towards the society.

State Award for Senior Citizens was given to Rev Dr L Noksangchila, 89 and Dr C Thridongse, 86, for their contribution to the society.

Earlier, a walkathon was organised in the State capital to mark the occasion.
