Nagaland officially bans dog meat import, sale

DIMAPUR, July 9 - The Nagaland Government today issued an order banning the import and sale of dog meat in the State.

The order was issued in the wake of approval of a Cabinet memorandum and in strict compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011.

According to the order, commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets, and commercial sale of dog meat in markets and dine-in restaurants have been banned.

The Nagaland Government has directed the district administrations, police, municipal administration and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, separately or jointly, to enforce the order.

The order said that any person found violating the order, would be liable to be punished under Section 428 and 429 of the IPC, 1860 and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and/or any such other provisions of law as may be applicable.
