Nagaland emerge champions

GUWAHATI, Feb 28 - Nagaland annexed the Dr T Ao NEC Gold Cup Under-21 Football Tournament title defeating hosts Assam by a solitary goal in the final at the SAI ground in Paltan Bazar here today.

The lone goal for Nagaland was scored by Ilanger in the 20th minute.

Earlier in the day, Meghalaya trounced Sikkim 5-1 to secure the third position. For Meghalaya, Samuel J Kynsi scored a hat-trick with goals in the 8th, 36th and 82nd minute respectively while Phrangi Buam and Robert Khongjoh scored a goal each in the 20th and 69th minute. Sikkim pulled one back in the 90th minute through Kunal Gurung.

The champion team received a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh along with a trophy while the runners-up team received a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh along with a trophy. The third position holders walked away with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
