NEW DELHI, Dec 4 � The plea of the North Eastern States for better connectivity is likely to get a boost with the Sonia Gandhi-headed National Advisory Council (NAC) making a strong case for better connectivity between the region and the rest of the country.
The 25th meeting of the National Advisory Council chaired by Sonia Gandhi last week dwelt at length on issues pertaining to the North-east. Those who attended the meeting included Anu Aga, Dr Narendra Jadhav, Dr Mihir Shah, Prof Pramod Tandon, Dr NC Saxena, Mondal, Mirai Chatterjee, Deep Joshi and Dr AK Shiva Kumar.
Prof Pramod Tandon, member and convener of the NAC Working Group on Development of North Eastern Region (NER), presented to the Council recommendations of the Working Group on the five sectors including health, telecommunication, air connectivity, higher education, especially science and engineering and access to financial services, said sources.
Telecom service was identified as one of the critical sectors and it was recommended that it should be treated as an essential service in the region.
Calling for increasing the level of investments, the Working Group underlined the need to connect States in the North-east with each other and with the rest of the country through reliable air connectivity by investing in infrastructure, small aircraft, helicopter services, technical manpower and state of the art meteorological infrastructure.
