Murder of democracy: Opp

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 26 Opposition today decried the Congress victory in the Rajya Sabha election as murder of democracy.

Addressing a joint press conference here after the results of the election to the two RS seats of the State were made known, Leader of the Opposition Chandra Mohan Patowary, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) leader HRA Choudhury, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mission Ranjan Das told the newspersons that the election to the two RS seats purged the Congress agents removed from the Opposition camp and strengthened its unity.

The Congress through manipulation has won the number game, but the Opposition has won the battle of ethics, they claimed.

Describing the Congress victory as a serious threat to Indian democracy they called upon the people to teach the Congress and the traitors a good lesson during the 2011 elections to the State Assembly.

The results of the RS polls today exposed the undemocratic character of the Congress as well as its leader Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who was initially maintaining that his partys second preference nominee was not enjoying the required support of the legislators. The Chief Minister also hinted possibility of the withdrawal of the second preference nominees nomination, they said.

By wining away some legislators, the Congress cannot win over the people, rather the ruling party along with the deserters of the Opposition camp, has earned the infamy of murderer of democracy, the Opposition leaders said.

HRA Choudhury announced that the two legislators of his party who defied the party whip, had been placed under suspension and if they fail to show cause satisfactorily within one month of received the notice for the purpose, they would be expelled from the party. Moreover, these legislators have disqualified themselves to remain as legislators, he said, adding the Speaker of the State Assembly would be moved for disqualifying these legislators, he said.
