Multiple protest marches in Lakhimpur district

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 11 - Spontaneous outburst of mass anger erupted across Lakhimpur district today as protests against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) intensified in the State.

The teachers of North Lakhimpur College and Lakhimpur Girls� College staged a sit-in protest against CAB at Khelmati, North Lakhimpur today. Lawyers of North Lakhimpur Bar Association also took to streets in protest of CAB today. Multiple protest marches were taken out at various places of the town today against CAB drawing spontaneous participation from the public. A massive protest rally converged in front of the Deputy Commissioner�s office demanding the scrapping of the bill terming it an existential threat to the linguistic and cultural identity of Assam. The protest rally was addressed by the leaders of AASU, AJYCP, TAYPA and many other organisations. The protesters also burnt the effigy of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

At the same time another protest march converged at the main traffic intersection at North Lakhimpur and it blocked the roads. Organisations like Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU), Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Kaivartta Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad and others led the protest rally. The protest rally prompted all the shops and business establishments to down their shutters. Within a few minutes, the entire North Lakhimpur town got shut down in protest of CAB. Banks and other financial establishments also closed their doors following the massive protests in the streets of North Lakhimpur.

In CD Road area of the town the NH-15 was blockaded by the All Assam Mariya Yuva Chatra Parishad by burning tyres in protest of CAB. Similar tyre burning protesters were also seen in KB Road, DK Road, Khelmati, Nakari and in other traffic intersections of North Lakhimpur.

In Laluk protesters led by AASU, AJYCP, ATASU, Matak Yuva Chatra Parishad burnt tyres on NH-15. Similar protests were also witnessed in Dhakuakhana, Ghilamora, Bihpuria, Narayanpur and Dhalpur in Lakhimpur district. Later in the evening, North Lakhimpur observed a blackout for an hour in protest against CAB called by the AJYCP.
