GUWAHATI, April 9 Remembering the qualities of eminent parliamentarian, poet and great orator Hem Barua, the Hem Barua Smriti Raksha Samity organized a programme at the Guwahati Press Club on the occasion of his death anniversary today.
Speaking on the occasion, former member of Rajya Sabha, Kumar Dipak Das said that a lot still remains to be done to pay proper tribute to Hem Barua, who convincingly placed the problems of the State on the floor of the Parliament.
At atime, when Indian Parliament had stalwarts like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru,Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, SA Dange, Acharya JBKripalani, HV Kamath, Shri Nath Rai, Morarji Desai, AtalBihari Vajpayee and many more, Hem Barua used tomesmerize everyone with his oratory skill, impressive language and well researched information, he said.
He lamented the fact that there was no portrait of Hem Barua in the Parliament and also said that there should be more comprehensive literature on the eminent personality of Assam.
GMDA Chairman Dhiren Baruah, while addressing the gathering said that unlike the present politicians who do not have in-depth knowledge about the problems of the State, Hem Barua had comprehensive knowledge of the issues and with his sharp analytical power, succeeded in attracting the attention of the policy makers towards those problems. He was not driven by any personal gain or motive, rather, he dedicated his life to the people of the State, he added.
Baruah also informed the gathering about GMDAs plan to install a statue of Hem Barua in Guwahati within this year along with the statues of many other eminent personalities of the State.
The seventh edition of Assam Gaurab Hem Barua, written by Kumud Chandra Deka and Nirbhik Sansad Hem Barua, a compilation of Hem Baruas parliamentary activities, were released on the occasion.
Keeping in mind the birth centenary celebration of Hem Barua on April 22, brisk preparations are on to celebrate it in the State. The Refinery Workers Union, Guwahati Refinery, would also celebrate the occasion from April 19 to April 22, with different competitions and a public meet.
Todays meeting was presided over by advocate Satyen Deka.
