SHILLONG, March 4 - Meghalaya Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma today said that the recent violence in the State could have been avoided, but due to the laidback attitude of the State Government, the people of the State are now suffering.

Blaming the State Government for the violence at Ichamati and subsequently in the State capital and elsewhere, the Congress leader said that the Government failed to see the writing on the wall.

The Government is completely disconnected with ground realities and looking after the affairs of governance with a chalta hai approach in spite of the writing on the wall, Sangma added.

He alleged that when the NGOs sought permission to hold a protest meeting at Ichamati, adequate precaution was not taken. Demanding a probe by the CBI or the NIA, the Meghalaya Leader of Opposition said a magisterial inquiry would not unravel the truth as to what triggered the violence. He maintained that only a proper probe would be able to get to the perpetrators of the crime at Ichamati and also the kingpins.

Condemning the Governments knee-jerk reaction in dealing with the law-and-order situation, Sangma said there is still confusion about the curfew timings. He said that suspension of mobile Internet services at this age is avoidable.

Sangma said the Opposition would table a resolution in the forthcoming budget session of the Assembly to urge the Government of India to repeal the CAA.
