MP quizzes Jorhat DFO

By Correspondent

JORHAT, Sept 10 - During a sudden visit to the office of the Divisional Forest officer (DFO) of Jorhat today, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa asked the DFO as to why he was negligent in protecting the forest resources of the district.

As the destruction of forests and exploitation of sand, logs and many other forest resources were alleged to be unabated in the district, Tasa smelt a rat on the inactive role of the DFO, who is entrusted to protect the forest resources by the government.

It was also mentioned that the DFO and his subordinate staff did not take any action against the sand mafias of the district, even after some officials of the administration in Mariani had reported unabated illegal sand mining.

The involvement of a section of corrupt forest officials, mafias and powerful politicians of the ruling Congress party in the illegal trade, was also alleged by several sensitive citizens in the district.

Though the officer tried to deny the allegations, he could not give any convincing reply to the MP, sources said.
