GUWAHATI, Oct 13 � In order to promote dairying activities among rural milk producers for enhanced milk production at the village level, the competitive milk price support extended by the West Assam Milk Union (WAMUL), initially in select areas, has now been extended to all its project areas.
Through this enhanced milk price support to rural producers along with providing a permanent milk market throughout the year, Purabi Dairy is trying to initiate more and more rural farmers into dairying, an official release from WAMUL said, adding that this has also helped in establishing a linkage of rural milk producers with urban consumers for getting better value for their produce.
�The enhanced milk price at the producers� level was necessary due to continuous increase in the cost of milk production at village level. In addition to increase in the cost of milk production at villages, it has also been observed over the years that there is unrelenting rise in the cost of milk processing, packaging and all other relevant expenditures,� it said.
In order to keep pace with the escalating cost from rural milk procurement, milk processing and right up to distribution among the consumers, WAMUL has also decided to revise the maximum retail price (MRP) of its Purabi brand milk in Guwahati, which came into effect from October 10. Accordingly, the MRP for each 500 ml pouch of Purabi milk cow milk and toned milk has been fixed at Rs 17 and Rs 16 respectively.
However, considering the consumers� interest, WAMUL has decided to launch double toned milk at a reasonable price within a very short period, it said.
WAMUL will also continue to distribute cow milk and toned milk in the same poly-pouch having existing MRP till arrival of fresh stock of poly-film with revised MRP print. However, for the convenience of the consumers, necessary stop-gap arrangements will be made for ink-stamping of revised MRP in each variant of milk pouch, it added.
