DIPHU, July 12 � The �Hills Youth Democratic Front� (HYDF), a Diphu-based ethnic youth body has taken serious exception to the Assam Government�s reported move to evict Karbi people from Sonapur locality of Kamrup district, which is an area reserved for the scheduled tribes of Assam.
The HYDF has claimed that the Assam Government is planning to establish 78 private industrial units in the area to facilitate big corporate houses.
The HYDF has alleged that Assam Government has established the �Sonapur Development Authority� with the sole intention of legitimising the systematic eviction of the Karbi tribes from their home soil where they have resided since time immemorial. The HYDF while expressing full solidarity for the oppressed Karbi�s of Sonapur tribal belt has demanded an immediate halt to the reported move.
Speaking to this reporter, Dr Man Sing Rongpi, MLA of Baithalangso has expressed shock over the allegations of the HYDF regarding the move of the Assam Government to evict Karbi people from the reserved tribal land to facilitate the industrial growth of Guwahati. �Definitely we shall have to think about some mechanism so that the tribal people are not alienated from their own land, and have to ensure that the law of the reserve tribal land is not breached,� Dr Man Sing said.
The HYDF while mentioning that the Assam Government is systematically evicting the Karbi population from its ancestral land on various pretexts said that right now the present Government is the biggest threat for the existence of tribal belts and blocks of the State. It pointed out that making room for the NEEPCO project in Dima Hasao district, hundreds of Karbi families were evicted from their own land in Umrangso.
The civil ethnic body has called on all right thinking people of Assam to resist the Government�s anti-tribal move and stand up for justice.
