Move to declare NE Mizoram as disturbed

By The Assam Tribune

AIZAWL, April 12 A leading anti-corruption watchdog in Mizoram has slammed the State Government for its proposal to declare the northeastern parts of the State adjoining Manipur as disturbed area.

If placed under disturbed area, armed security personnel would terrorise the innocent civilians of the area, where the Hmar community are concentrated, Ngursailova Sailo, general secretary of Peoples Right to Information and Development Implementing Society of Mizoram (PRISM) said.

It could harm the unity of the Mizos as it could be conceived in the area as targeting the Hmar community. Mizoram had been disturbed area for 20 years during which the people suffered excesses of the security forces, he said.

PRISM urged the State Government to take steps to improve the security of the people and work for the development of the area, he said.

The State Government has been mulling to declare the northeastern part of the State as a disturbed area after the ambush of the Assembly Committee on Government Assurances team on March 28 by HPC(D) militants near Mizoram-Manipur border at Zokhawthiang hamlet in which three policemen were killed. PTI
