Move to clean, maintain Brahmaputra riverfront

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 To ensure an uninterrupted view of the Brahmaputra riverfront for the common people of Guwahati, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration has taken up a project for cleanliness and maintenance of the riverfront from Bharalumukh to Uzanbazar.

Under the initiative, work has started to clean the riverfront from Bharalumukh to Sukleswarghat in the first phase, that also includes the stretches of Shankardev Udyan, Bhagwan Mahavir Udyan, and the stretches occupied and managed by the IWTD, private cruise service, restaurants etc.

Visiting the riverfront today, Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) today gave instructions for clearing the riverfront and removal of encroachments. Seeking public participation for proper cleaning, maintenance and beautification of the riverfront, he asked the public organisations and commercial establishments to come forward for assisting the district administration.

We want a sustainable maintenance of the riverfront, where common people can come, spend time and appreciate the inherent beauty of the Brahmaputra riverfront. Other than making it accessible to one and all, we also want to bring some uniformity in the entire area, by connecting different parks etc., with the help of overbridges, he said.

To make the entire project more systematic and scientific, the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee has been entrusted with the task of studying the soil morphology of the riverfront and suggesting the best possible construction on the riverfront. The study report is expected to come within a year.

Till the study report comes and we get adequate support from the public, we would continue to do the cleanliness and maintenance work, with the resources available with us. The idea is to develop the riverfront systematically into a spacious park, where people can come for walks etc., he added.

The DC has also instructed making alternative arrangements for the sugarcane market, located on a stretch of the riverfront. The district administration is also contemplating bringing the entire stretch of riverfront under the control of one authority for an integrated and better maintenance of the area.
