Move on to elect new Speaker in Manipur

IMPHAL, March 15 � Hours after the formal swearing-in ceremony of newly elected members of Manipur State Legislative Assembly and the Chief Minister, steps are on to elect a new Speaker of the Assembly.

Manipur Assembly Secretary Y Indira Devi, in an official notification here, said that election of the new Speaker will be held on March 19 at 10 am as fixed by Governor Gurbachan Jagat. The last date for filing of nomination papers for the election is March 17 (3pm).

The Governor has also summoned the first session of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly on March 19 at 2 pm at the new premises of the State Assembly in the new Capital Complex.

It may be mentioned that the name of Protem Speaker Laishram Nandakumar Singh is doing the rounds, with him being a senior legislator and former lawyer.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee chief Gaikhangam air-dashed to New Delhi along with All India Congress Committee (AICC) observer Luizinho Faleirio yesterday to meet the party high command and finalise the ministerial berths.
