Morigaon clinch I-D cricket title

GUWAHATI, March 7 � Morigaon became the proud winners in the Plate Group Nuruddin Trophy Senior Inter District Cricket Tournament with a three-wicket victory against Bongaigaon.

Requiring 239 for an outright victory on the final day of the four-day title clash at the Assam Cricket Association�s Barsapara stadium here today, Morigaon scored 241 losing seven wickets.

Bongaigaon resumed their second innings at the overnight total of 233 for seven and lost their remaining three wickets after adding 21 runs as they were all out for 254.

Morigaon had a dismal start losing their first three wickets at the team�s total of 10. Sniffing victory, the Bongaigaon bowlers started putting pressure on the Morigaon batsmen after the lunch break. But Nipjyoti Gohain (21) and Manashjyoti Deka (67) added 69 runs for the fourth wicket which virtually dragged them out of crisis.

Manashjyoti, who was adjudged man-of-the-final, played the role of sheet anchor and added 40 runs with Sahidur Rahman (57) for the sixth wicket.

Finally, it was the seventh wicket partnership of 61 runs between Sahidur and Saddiqur Rahman (26 n.o) which helped their team in reaching near the winning target.

South paw spinner Jyoti Prasad took three Morigaon wickets.

In the closing function, ACA president and State Public Health Minister Gautam Roy, ACA secretary Bikash Baruah, former Ranji players Ratul Das, Satyagopal Chakravorty, Nasir Gul Khan, Pratim Hazarika, Debashis Sinha, ACA official Sujit Choudhury were present and gave away the prizes to the teams and individuals.

Ranjit Sarma and Bimal Jain were the umpires of the final while Anupam Das was the scorer. Ibocha Singh acted as the ACA observer of the match.
