JALUKBARI, Nov 16 - Kenji Hiramatsu, Ambassador of Japan to India, has said that although there is trade imbalance between the two countries, Indian exports are increasing and Indian products like the Baleno car designed by Japanese automaker Suzuki under the Union government�s Make in India initiative have gained acceptability in Japan.
Hiramatsu was delivering a special lecture on �Transformed Partnership between Japan and India: Special Strategic and Global Partnership� organised by Gauhati University on November 13 at the Conference Hall of GU-Institute of Science and Technology (GU-IST), said a delayed press release. The lecture was part of an initiative of the Centre for South East Asian Studies (CSEAS), GU.
Hiramatsu highlighted the historical and civilisational connections shared by the two countries and spoke on possible areas of cooperation and friendship.
He focused on Japanese economic and technological investment in infrastructure development in India, and referred to projects like Delhi Metro, Mumbai Metro, Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail project and green projects like Ganga and Yamuna river water treatment, and the Blue Sky initiative to ensure healthy lives of the people in India.
Recognising the geo-strategic and security importance of the North East and the Central government�s Act East policy, Hiramatsu underlined the importance of extending the platform of BIMSTEC to Japan that will not only help in economic development of the North East but also in management of natural disasters like earthquake, cyclone, flood etc.
Earlier, CSEAS director Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta welcomed Hiramatsu and his wife Patricia Hiramatsu to GU, while GU Vice Chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika spoke on the historical and civilisational links between India and Japan.
