Moran students to stage stir over ST status

TINSUKIA, Feb 10 � Demanding Scheduled Tribe status to the Moran community, the All Assam Moran Students� Union (AAMSU) announced a protest programmes at a press conference here today.

General secretary (in-charge) Prashanta Khatwal said that the members of the Moran community have been suffering due to the continuous neglect of both the State and Central Governments with regard to the fulfilment of their demand.

To assert their demand for ST status along with some other issues, the executive committee meeting of the student body, held at Digboi on February 9, resolved to take up some agitational programmes. The programmes include sit-in demonstrations at Kakopathar on February 13, at Doomdooma on February 16, at Margherita on February 17 and at Tinsukia on February 18. On February 20, the student body will resort to a Rail Roko programme and on February 23, it will stage an Air Services Roko programme at Dibrugarh (Mohanbari) Airport. On March 5, the protesters will go to Guwahati to protest at the Last Gate.

The student body has also decided to stage a protest programme in Kolkata and Delhi in March. It threatened that if the Moran community was not provided the ST status before the 2016 Assembly elections, it would take steps against all political parties in the election. The press meet was attended by several office-bearers of the AAMSU.
