Moran students� stir over ST status

TINSUKIA, Feb 11 � The All Assam Moran Students� Union staged economic and rail blockade in Tinsukia district today to press for fulfilment of its demands.

Activists of the student body resorted to 12-hour bandh programmes at oil movement stations of Oil India Ltd.(OIL) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at Hapjan, Baghjan, Haveda and Makum oil collection stations of OIL and Tinsukia oil (Product) terminal of IOC Ltd. of Tinsukia district and thereby stalling the movements of both crude and oil products.

AAMSU activists also staged rail roko programme at Hijuguri, Tinsukia blocking movements of trains on the main line.

It may be mentioned that in view of the failure of talks between various organisations of Moran ethnic groups and the State Government held on February 7 in regards to their 24-point charter of demands including Schedule Tribe status for the Moran community, the student body resumed its agitational programme on February 8.
