By Correspondent

PATACHARKUCHI, Jan 11 With a few days remaining for Bhogali Bihu people from all walks of life have already started preparations for enjoying Bihu. In Bajali, 71-year-old Bhaben Choudhury of Barbang village (Kacharibhitha) has no time for rest as he is busy day and night in producing local gur(molasses) in his farm. He along with a team of 12 workers has been working in his farm, harvesting sugarcane and extracting juice and then boiling the final product since the last few days.

Local gur is in high demand in rural areas during Bhogali Bihu as people from various parts of the area come to collect the product. Every year he cannot meet the demand of the people, he said. Due to hard labour involved in cultivating sugarcane, cultivation is becoming tougher and so the efforts of the old man have come in for praise by the people of the locality. This year he cultivated sugarcane in 2 bighas of land and he expects 7-8 quintals of gur. Though in the market, the gur brought from other places of the State has been selling at Rs 70 to 75 per kg, he is selling gur at 110 per kg. His endeavour in the last ten years has drawn the attention of the people.

This year he has been assisted by the Agriculture department which has given him a machine to extract sugarcane juice at a subsidised rate which has reduced his labour to some extent.

Choudhury said that where there is a will to do something, then everything is possible. He also has an orange garden at his home besides betel leaves, valuable trees, bamboos etc. This year he has also cultivated mustard seeds in 20 bighas of land. He said that his aim is to create a revolution in the agriculture sector and show the way to the new generation.
