Mohan Bhaira Award to Loknath Kutum

NALBARI, Jan 28 - The name of renowned folk artiste of Majuli, Loknath Kutum was announced for the Mohan Bhaira Award 2018. The Nalbari district unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) and Nalbari Zilla Unnati Sabha have jointly been presenting the Mohan Bhaira Award to a senior folk artiste every year since 2009. This was disclosed in a press released issued by Gunajyoti Pathak and Akshay Deka, president and secretary of the Nalbari district unit of AASU respectively.

Folk artist Loknath Kutum who retired as a head master from Srimanta Sankardev ME School has been working for the promotion of Mising folk cultures. Kutum is involved in the Mising folk culture since1983 and connected with 30 cultural organisations of that area.The award will be presented to the artiste at a function to be held at the Nalbari Natya Mandir on February 1 so as to coincide with the death anniversary of renowned folk artiste and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Mohan Bhaira.The award giving function will be attended by renowned sculptor Biren Singha and AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya. The function to be presided over by Gunajyoti Pathak will be attended by Saraswati Barman, widow of Late Mohan Bhaira.The award carries a cash award along with a citation, among others. It may be mentioned here that till date nine folk artistes, namely Purnya Prava Dutta Tamuly (2009), Sitaram Ray (2010), Muktaram Baruah Ojah (2011), Manik Saikia Ojah (2012), Ruhin Rabha (2013), Dwijen Gogoi (2014), Prabhat Sarma (2015), Hari Barbayan (2016) and Ramcharan Bharali (2017) have been awarded the Mohan Bhaira Award.
