GUWAHATI, Aug 16 - Opposition Congress has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of making false claims with regard to development of the North East under the NDA regime in his Independence Day speech and of trying to deceive the people of this region.

Speaking to The Assam Tribune today, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora said the Prime Minister had resorted to falsehood and wordplay in his Independence Day speech.

Modi has spoken of development. But nothing practical has been seen on the ground here. Under the NDA dispensation, the Special Category State status was withdrawn, Central funds were slashed, the NEIIPP was discontinued and the functional autonomy of the North Eastern Council has been taken away, Bora said.

He said public sector undertakings in Assam and the NE, like the paper mills in Jagiroad and Silchar, have been closed down and may be sold off.
