Modi lauds Mawlynnong in �Mann ki baat�

SHILLONG, Oct 25 - The remote hamlet of Mawlynnong in East Khasi Hills has once again made Meghalaya proud with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressing his amazement about the village being the cleanest village in Asia, in �Mann Ki Baat�

progarmme.

Modi said that he was recently informed about the village by Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan through a letter. �Meghalaya Governor has written a letter� and in his letter, he has mentioned about a village Mawlynnong,� Modi said in his monthly radio programme aired on All India Radio.

The Prime Minister went on to say that he came to know through the letter how the village is dedicated to cleanliness. This village is devoted to cleanliness since last several years and was awarded as the cleanest village in Asia, few years back, the Prime Minster added.

�I was amazed to know that there is such a village in remote North East,� he exclaimed.

Referring to Swachh Bharat Mission, Modi said people in Meghalaya from all generations are devoted towards cleanliness and is carrying forward the Swachh Bharat Mission passionately through examples such as Mawlynnong. He further stated that villages such as Mawlynnong infuse confidence in the people of the country about carrying out cleanliness drives.

Modi also said that this Diwali people should pledge to clean up the general surroundings after the celebrations are over. �This Diwali, let us clean our surroundings, along with our homes and maintain this cleanliness even after Diwali,� he said.

He also mentioned about the role of the media in creating awareness about cleanliness especially during the time of Diwali. �I want to compliment today the whole media of the country,� he said about the role of different media in creating awareness on cleanliness.

Finally, the Prime Minister said that it is hoped that when the country celebrates the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019, the country should be garbage-free.
