Officials from the remaining districts of Imphal East, Bishnupur, Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul also attended the mock drill exercises.

The mock drill was conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in association with the State Disaster Management Authority. The mock drill exercise will be an annual feature from next year in a move to improve the preparedness among the general public, said NDMA member KM Singh.

The State being in earthquake prone zone would suffer heavy casualty in the event of a high magnitude earthquake. Around 38,000 people would perish and 2,10,000 would suffer injury if an earthquake of 8.7 magnitude (that took place in Shillong in 1897) hits the region, as per a detailed earthquake scenario developed by the Jorhat based Council of Science and Industrial Research-North East Institute of Science and Technology.

Thus a repeat of 1897 tremor has depicted a toll of 8,43,000 in the NE including 6,00,000 in Assam, 68,000 in Meghalaya, 66,000 in Tripura, 30,000 in Nagaland, 17,000 in Mizoram and 12,000 each in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
