Mob lynches GNLA cadre

BAGHMARA, June 8 � Two suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres were critically assaulted by a mob in remote Jaksongram village near Baghmara in South Garo Hills today. The village is situated close to the Bangladesh border and about 15 km from the district headquarter of Baghmara.

The incident happened between 4 pm to 5 pm and the two were taken to the Baghmara Civil Hospital where one died and the other is said to be critical.

According to the police, the two had come to Jaksongram to serve demand notes and had even tried to forcibly take a villager to the nearby jungle. Angry villagers surrounded the two and tied them up. They were then severely beaten by the villagers.

The two were then taken to the town of Baghmara and handed over to the police. The police took them to the Baghmara Civil Hospital where one was declared dead.

The deceased cadre has been identified as Niku Marak (26) while the other is yet to be identified as he is unable to speak. Sources said his hands and arms have suffered fractures following the beating by the villagers.

Demand notes of the GNLA were recovered from their possession.
