DIPHU, April 24 - Police today burst tear gas shells and lathi charged to disperse a mob that attacked Diphu police station demanding that a person, arrested for alleged rape and death of a girl, be handed over to them.
The mob which turned violent resorted to stone pelting and damaged several vehicles parked near the police station. At least 11 persons including 10 police personnel were injured in the stone pelting.
A tense situation is now prevailing in the town. Security forces have stepped up patrolling in the sensitive areas to ensure that no untoward incident occurs.
