MNF alleges road fund diversion

By Zodin sanga

AIZAWL, Oct 8 - Opposition Mizo National Front on Friday said the Congress Government has received a total of Rs 12.43 crore during the last four years for maintenance of the National Highway 44 (A) that connects the State capital Aizawl and Mamit town. But, the 130-km road, one of the most important roads in Mizoram is in untravellable condition, it alleged.

This National Highway falls under the purview of State PWD (NH Division-1).

According to MNF, the Mizoram Government received Rs 2.47 crore from Ministry of Road Transport & Highway during 2012-2016 for ordinary repairing. It also received from the same Ministry Rs 1.036 crore for flood damage repairing during the same period.

During the same period, the Ministry has also sanctioned Rs 8.917 crore for road resurfacing to the Mizoram Government, said K Vanlalvena, president of MNF Youth Wing.

The total funds received by Mizoram Govt during the last four years come to Rs 12.43 crore, Vanlalvena said and asked the Congress Government the whereabouts of these funds.

The road is now in untravellable condition. If such huge amount of funds have been utilised for the right purpose we would have seen a better road, the MNF Youth president said.

The MNF Youth Wing demanded on Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who looks after PWD, or his brother and Minister of State for PWD, or Minister John Rotluangliana to give a reasonable explanation on the poor conditions of this highway. If they cant give an explanation, it indicates that the funds have been diverted, the MNF Youth president alleged.

The MNF Youth Wing has two days back launched a poster campaign against the States poor conditions of roads.
