MLA Gopinath Das absconding

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 29 - Accused of raping his 14-year-old domestic help, Boko legislator Gopinath Das has been constantly changing his locations and had even travelled to neighbouring states to avoid arrest, said Assam Director General of Police Khagen Sharma today.

The Assam Police has been facing sharp criticism for not being able to arrest the AIUDF MLA who has been absconding for more than 20 days.

The DGP said that police teams have even gone to other states in search of Das and they are in constant lookout for him. Das has not contacted the persons known to him back home, which is making it difficult for the police to trace him, the DGP said, adding that the MLAs final bail plea is also likely to be rejected by the court.

Police has so far arrested a number of persons including some of the family members of the Boko legislator who had tried to influence the witness and even produced documents.

The victim girl and her parents had registered a case against Das at Boko police station on September 6, but the legislator has been giving police the slip.

The Assam Police chief informed that both the personal security officers of the Boko MLA have been closed to the headquarters.

In the context of the recent drink-driving incident involving a police official of SP rank, the DGP said that an inquiry has been initiated and action will be taken against him if found guilty.

In some of the earlier cases too, we have initiated action against senior police officials. We would do the necessary in this case too, he added.
