Mizoram witnessed 69 kidnappings in 12 years

AIZAWL, June 27 � Several underground groups active in various parts of North East had kinapped 69 persons between 1999 and 2011 in Mizoram, police sources said today.

According to the Mizoram police, militant organisations involved in kidnapping incidents in Mizoram are Hmar Peoples� Convention-Democratic, Bru National Liberation Front, Zomi Revolutionary Army, Bru Liberation Front of Mizoram, Naga militants, PREPAK, United Democratic Liberation Army and other smaller groups.

The police said 33 persons out of 69 kidnapped during this period were non-Mizos, police further said. During 2000, 23 persons were kidnapped which is the highest number in 12 years whereas during 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2010 there was no kidnapping case.

HPC-D, which is the most active underground organisation in Mizoram had topped in kidnapping people where 26 persons were kidnapped by this group followed by BLFM. In fact, the Bru militants had kidnapped 18 persons while ZRA was involved in seven cases of kidnapping officials and contractors, the police added.

ZRA had kidnapped six persons during 2003 and released three of them, said the police.
