Mizoram preparing to celebrate Xmas

By Newmai News

AIZAWL, Dec 23 - Preparation for Christmas is in full swing across Mizoram. Last night, all churches thronged Assam Rifles Ground here for the grand Unity Carol Service organised by Mizo Theological Association (MTA). The event is understood to be the first time all the different churches have come together since Christianity entered Mizoram in 1894.

Popular gospel artistes and Gospel Musical Bands from different parts of the State performed their numbers besides Christmas songs by groups. MTA President Rev Dr Lalchhuanawma preached the Gospel. The famous Halleluia Chorus by the Unity Choir added to the grandeur of the occasion.

Christmas was celebrated for the first time in Mizoram way back in 1871 on the bank of Tuivai river by British Army. Welsh Missionary Rev Williams William was known to be the first who came preaching the Gospel in Mizoram (Lushai Hills) in 1891.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has greeted the Mizos in different parts of the world on the occasion of Christmas. My warm wishes and greetings to my fellow Mizos on this happy occasion, he said in his message.
