AIZAWL, Aug 7 - The Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER), a premier medical college, was inaugurated here today.
On the occasion, Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said that the college was one of the biggest milestones in the history of Mizoram and attributed it to the peace and development that has prevailed in the State since the signing of the Mizo Peace Accord in 1986.
Health Minister Lal Thanzara thanked his colleagues in various departments who struggled to make the college happen.
�Our movement for establishment of the first ever medical college in Mizoram dates back to 2009-�10, which was spearheaded by the present Chief Minister of Mizoram, ably assisted by former Health Minister Lalrinliana Sailo and his officers,� he said.
�In the 2013 State Assembly elections, we secured yet another mandate of the people to continue our efforts for the medical college.�
The Centre cleared the setting up of the first medical college in May this year. The Centre�s nod came after the recommendations of the Medical Council of India (MCI) following three inspections.
Officials of the MIMER said that the medical college at present has 74 teachers, including three professors, four associate professors, 28 assistant professors, eight senior resident doctors, 17 junior resident doctors and 14 demonstrators.
As per norms of the Letter of Permission, the State Government was granted to recruit 409 staff, including 104 teaching staff, 33 administrative staff, 44 technical staff, 54 ancillary staff, and 174 nursing staff for the establishment of the medical college.
The director of the MIMER also said that requisite infrastructure has been laid for the smooth functioning of the Mizoram medical college, and a library which stores 1,700 books has already been put into place.
Officials also said that the State Government would have to incur an expenditure of Rs 40-50 crore annually for running the medical college.
Day scholars will have to spend Rs 80,550 and hostellers will need to spend 98,250 every year for studying in the medical college.
