Mizoram foodgrain production up

By Newmai News

AIZAWL, Oct 13 Foodgrain production in Mizoram has increased by 30 per cent this year. A source from the Mizoram agriculture department said that buoyed by the considerable improvement in the production of foodgrains, the Mizoram government has underlined the need for tapping the potentials.

The source also said that the Vision 2020 comprises plans and schemes to be taken up including target areas to be covered with programmes for protection of the environment. The source added that this is partly the contribution of the new system called SRI.

Meanwhile, officials in the State Agriculture Department said that the area of jhum cultivation in Mizoram decreased by 36 % and that of wet rice cultivation increased by 28.4 % during last year. At present, Mizoram produces only 25 % of the total rice consumption. Mizoram produces only 44,950 MT of rice against the total consumption of 1,80,000 MT. As the government declared a bumper rice harvest year, more farmers took up wet rice cultivation.
