Mizoram boxer clinches WBC youth world title

Aizawl, Mar 7: Mizoram boxer Lalrinsanga Tlau defeated Ghana's Eric Quarm to become the new WBC youth world super featherweight champion in an eight-round contest bout held in Aizawl Saturday night.

All the judges scored the fight 80-72, 80-72 and 80-72 in favour of Tlau in the championship fight, sanctioned by the World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman. The event was conducted under the technical supervision of the Indian Boxing Council (IBC).

The title fight took place at R Dengthuama Hall here and was a stream on LPS TV on Pay-per-view.

It was a close fight, but the Mizoram boxer managed to convincingly defeat the Ghanian on the judges’ scorecards.

"I am extremely happy and thankful to all those who supported me in the journey to this title," the 21-year-old champion said after the bout.

The ''LPS Fight Night'' was organised by Grassroot Boxing Promotions.

Lalrinsanga Tlau became the third Indian to hold this youth world title. This win will definitely give Lalrinsanga a significant bump in world rankings.

Mizoram Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte, who witnessed the title fight, announced a Rs 10 lakh cash award for the Mizo boxer.
