Mizo party demands spl session to pass Bill

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Aug 9 - The PRISM (Peoples Representative for Identity and Status of Mizoram) party has criticised Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi for not giving his assent to the Mizoram Maintenance of Household Register Bill, 2019.

The Mizoram Assembly had passed the Bill, which is akin to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam, on March 19 this year. The Governor, however, is yet to give his assent to the Bill that seeks to detect foreigners staying illegally in the State.

The PRISM said that if the Assembly passes the Bill again and sends it to the Governor, he cannot withhold his assent, and demanded that a special session of the Assembly be convened to pass the Bill afresh.

On August 1, a conglomeration of civil societies and students organisations had urged the State Government to impress upon the Governor to give his assent to the Bill.
