AIZAWL, April 12 - Young Mizo Association, the largest non-governmental organisation in Mizoram, has taken a strong exception to NDA Government�s decision to hold Digital India Day on April 14 that coincides with Good Friday, a sacred day for the State�s Christian-majority population.
A statement of central committee of YMA today said the Central Government had instructed Mizoram Government to organise a Digidhan Mela on Good Friday, which is �totally objectionable.�
Terming the NDA Government�s decision as a show of disregard to one�s religion, the YMA appealed the State Government not to organise Digidhan Mela or any other official function on Good Friday.
Even as his Meghalaya counterpart Mukul Sangma (Congress) has made it clear that Digital Mela Day would not be observed in his State, Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla is yet to speak out against the Central Government�s decision.
Tura Correspondent adds: A day after Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma hit out at Central Government�s move to mark this year�s Good Friday as Digital India Day, MP from Tura, Conrad K Sangma today shot off a letter seeking deferment of Digital India Day for Christians across the country.
In his letter to PM Narendra Modi, Conrad stated, �It is learnt that Digital India Day (DID) this year falls on Good Friday. I express my best wishes for the celebration of DID but with deepest and sincere concern of the Christian community, I suggest you to kindly defer DID so that the secular fabric of India remained honoured.�
Christian dominated North East has not taken too well to the idea of observance of DID on the same day as Good Friday with most coming out openly on social media to condemn the move.
