GUWAHATI, Nov 7 - In a tragic incident, an eight-year-old boy died after an iron gate fell on him at a construction site at Saukuchi where his parents are engaged as daily wage earners. The victim has been identified as Jaher Ali.
According to police, the victim had been accompanying his parents at the construction site for the past few days and the incident reportedly happened when the child was trying to open the iron gate, which was loosely fitted. The family hails from Barpeta district.
After being taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), doctors declared him brought dead.
�A case has been lodged with the Fatasil Ambari Police Station to ascertain the cause and circumstances leading to the child�s death,� Saidul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Fatasil Ambari Police Station told The Assam Tribune.
Reacting to the incident, child rights activist Miguel Das Queah said, �It is the duty of the contractor concerned to ensure safety and security of the children present at a construction site. There should be provision like cr�che and breastfeeding room too, or else such incident will take place again. Government machinery needs to take the matter seriously.�
